and so it begins: Provincetown 2012

I plan to keep my posts (mostly) brief this summer. Probably more photos and less prose. But some things never change and one is my love affair with Provincetown. This is my place there. Couldn't afford it now but could then. It is cozy and sweet. It is also rented out for the next five weeks and getting it ready has been HARD. An interior leak. Very costly gutter repair. Things that should work and need to work and didn't and don't.

But enough of that. Here is one late afternoon and evening walking along Commercial Street. I want to show you  the 'commercial' side of a town by the sea that swells from 3500 year round residents to 20,000 summer visitors.

The sea is majestically behind all of these photos, but those views are for another day. It's a grand place, Provincetown, if you ever have the occasion. Strangers talk to one another for no reason. The ocean breezes settle the most anxious mind. It welcomes you, whoever you are, where ever you've been. xo

  2. Such an absolutely wonderful place, kj! Leaks and gutters notwithstanding.

I'd love to live in a place like that. So much brightness; so much character. I hope you have a wonderful time, notwithstanding the fact that you have it rented out for the next five weeks. (Do you get to use it at all this summer?)

    Happy 4th of July.

    1. Rob-bear, lower how observant you are. I won't tell you how much those new gutters and drainpipes ended up costing. The house, now split into three condos, used to be a convent for cigar smoking brazilian nuns--honest to god!

Five one week rentals extending to early August but one week in July I will be there with Jess and the boys . And come August I have two weeks on vacation from work. Then, in the fall, long weekends. I'm very lucky :-)

  3. This reminds me VERY much of Rehoboth Beath DE where I just spent a fabulous week. I got to check seeing Fireflies off my bucket list! They were so much more beautiful than I imagined!!! OMG! I lay on a park bench until 2 AM watching Friday nights east coast storm roll in, unroll, and leash fury through a warm rain. Simple pleasures, or not even, to most...but I was overwhelmed.

    XO

    1. Annie, how great !!!!' been thinking bout you. You were on the east coast and you saw and felt the same storm I did. I like the synchronicity of that

My favorite fireflies live on a Vermont hill on a very dark night. I'm so glad you'll be carrying that miracle with you from now on

      Love!

  4. One day if I make it back to New Bedford I am going to have to go that far out on the cape. It would be good to just be able to be without any bullshit. Course my luck would bring a 'cane. I did get close when I was out to sea though back in '74. Of course the ship was in a hurricane then too.

  6. I love your header, kj. (Whenever I see zinnias I always think of you and the way you rescued and filled your home with them when there was a storm on the horizon.)

I am looking forward to a summer of photos (I hope at least one includes your latest rescue, Chase :) )

    Lots of love,
    Kristin

  8. What a place,,,,and I love your nest within it.
The 'joys of ownership',,,,sometimes an oxymoron when repairs
are factored in, but once paid, soon forgotten.
Enjoy what you can, when you can.I know you are grateful.
That 'ol sea calls to me,,,,my body may be land locked, but my heart isn't.

  10. i laugh at myself - i am overwhelmed by the number of people and so i remember my children laughing at me a couple months ago, me overwhelmed in the grocery with a dozen people. kj, how will i manage to move to the states?

...just read the comments to understand how this is your place. so it is yours but you rent it out. lucky renters:) it looks wonderful. i'm glad you'll get the chance to enjoy it yourself.

  11. Erin, truth be told I avoid the crowds and commercial street. There is a quaintness in the side streets and the fishing boats-ocean that stirs me big time xo writing here is orgasmic, Erin. Mary Oliver writes from here

    Where are you moving to?
