In a few hours I will begin my twice a year Big Yellow writing group, twelve of us who will write from Friday night through Sunday at noon. We are eight writers and four songwriters who will write or compose for an hour at a time and then read or sing what we've done.
.Normally I am psyched to the maximum. But not this time.
.
This time I have no idea whatsoever what I will write, want to write, might write. I know I will not work on book #2. It has become difficult, painful even. I need to put the manuscript away for a while and revisit it with a fresh eye.
.
So WHAT will I write about this sweekend? Poetry? A short story? The start of a new novel? A fable? The tales and tails of Emily Rabbit?
.
I have no idea. Not a clue. It's not surprising when I don't know what my metaphors and characters will say or do, but normally I have some idea about what and who they are.
.
I guess I'll find out when my fingers start moving......
.
Does anybody else start with a blank page or a blank canvas?
.
Happy weekend to all.

At least write one emily rabbit story that I can illustrate. Or maybe write the story of how she ended up with a thorn in her paw - and in a deep dark cave and Miss Em rescued her.
ReplyDeleteI start with a blank mind!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy what comes. I am sure they will :)
I often start with a blank slate. Just begin and see what happens. Have fun, that's most important. Listen, laugh and eat well.
ReplyDeletemim, hahaha! maybe. perhaps. possibly. good idea! ♥
ReplyDeletelydia, come what may, right?
suki, gee, i am getting good advice all around today. and the sun has just come out, shining on my waning but standing tall geraniums. i will be sure to laugh and eat, suki. hell, i will listen too. tsupmwah! (this is my new official term of affection) :)
I trust a character will walk in the door of your imagination, and take it from there. You'll learn about them first hand... indeed, they'll take you by the hand, and lead you to storyland. Trust.
ReplyDeleteMaybe it will be better to go into it with no pre-conceived ideas? I hope it is a good experience for you either way.
ReplyDeleteJust throw something on the page, kj! I have complete and utter faith in your talent. After word one, it will all just happen. My vote is for a short story, because I think you excel at that form. You go girl!!!!! Have fun! xox Pam
ReplyDeletePS I met my deadline! WOOOOT!!!
I echo what Pam said. I have faith in you. Make having fun your goal.
ReplyDeleteLet go. xoxo
P.S. As for me I always start with a blank something, canvas or ball of clay, it's the best way for me.
Does anybody else start with a blank page or a blank canvas?
ReplyDeleteEvery single day kj. I have a third chap book I am working on now and I never know what will end up in at the start of the day. When I write each days new piece I look at a completely white screen and just let it go. You'll be doing fine by nine.
I'm sure you'll come with up a cracking good story! Have been absent awhile in blogland as have been so busy these past two weeks with family. Catching up slowly!
ReplyDeleteI look at a blank page and start doodling, just letting the pen or pencil go and do what it will. My mind is completely at rest while I do this...and somehow, a couple of sentences appear. I find once I've begun the sentences, the rest follows easily.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your weekend, kj...write something totally out of your comfort zone and make it fun!!
that's the most important thing.
is there any other way to start other than facing a blank page or canvas?
ReplyDeleteIt's a blank mind that freezes me in place. But once the imagination kicks in I can face a giant blank wall!!
It's been a while though, but slowly I'm coming back.
I know you'll get in the groove KJ. That's who you are!
xoxo
lo♥
I think this is the perfect place from which to start, KJ! I am like you and like to have an idea, but I sometimes think the most wonderful results come when we don't control things from the outset. When I sit in front of a blank canvas, I am always afraid that nothing will come to me, but then it always does. Just enjoy the process and have fun!! Love, Silke
ReplyDeleteWith so many thoughts and ideas in my head i wonder if anything is really started with a blank canvas (or page), even if that's what i thought to begin with.
ReplyDeleteThe good thing is you are creative and something will come to you. maybe it'll be the hidden masterpiece!
Most of all, have fun!!
☺
Sometimes I just lay fabics out and start sewing them down with no rhyme or reason and often the results are wonderful. Be brave and just go for it. Do you write in long hand or machine?/keyboard?
ReplyDeletewow, what a great thing to do! I'm sure you would have come up with something magical for the time, how did you get on?
ReplyDeleteI don't know but it's difficult to write in a some sort of pressure..words don't come out from the place where it should be..
ReplyDeleteI know you will just do fine!
ReplyDeleteBeing among so many inspirational persons will let your creativity flow dear!
I am not good with blank canvasses.....:( Mostly I start something in my head first............
Unless it is a birth mandala then I have something that leads me, I like that.
Can't wait to hear what you have been doing/writing!
But have fun dear! That is what is important, enjoy what you are doing!
