Wild Geese
You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
for a hundred miles through the desert, repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
love what it loves. Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.
Meanwhile the world goes on.
Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain
are moving across the landscapes,
over the prairies and the deep trees,
the mountains and the rivers.
Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,
are heading home again. Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting--
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.

To shop and laugh and talk deep thoughts
To ponder mights and coulds and oughts
To eat and meet and walk and sit
Who couldn't love this lovely fit?
Who wouldn't smile start to end
To have this Very Special Friend?

Hi kj~ Lovely speal post for Lori! Happy birthday! We should all have these two poems permanently next to our desks! I think we're more vulnerable when our self confidence is low. And a starting point to bring back up: self-care? Passionate interests that take us out of ourselves?
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear you've been writing! Is that a fuchsia hanging basket?
I feel bad about Stella. We just went through that with our German shepherd Daisy. We swear we'll get hip transplants (if needed) at perhaps age 5 next time.
Keep on being you and enjoying this vacation of sorts! Love
Sweet words music to my eyes!
