Hidden in a sappy novel by James Patterson called Suzanne’s Diary for Nicholas, a story of a young mother with cardiac trouble, lies a gem called the Lesson of the Five Balls.
.
.
The five balls pretty much sum up what’s important in life.
.
Four of the balls are made of glass. They are breakable. But the fifth ball is made of rubber.
.
Four of the balls are made of glass. They are breakable. But the fifth ball is made of rubber.
.
Work is flexible. It can rebound. But this is not always true of your family. Or your friends. Or your health or your integrity. These balls must be handled carefully and gently.
.
But work? Work is a rubber ball.
.
But work? Work is a rubber ball.
Is that why I'm always getting smacked in the head with it? ;)
ReplyDeleteIndeed it is, and I've bounced around from one to another enough to know so. Hey, if I'm the one bouncing then that would make me the rubber ball, wouldn't it? Hmmm....let me go rethink this statement.
ReplyDeleteAnd this is of course absolutely right. And yet sometimes we think it is the most important thing.
ReplyDeleteHow do leave a comment about someone's balls without sounding...well, what I meant was it's how you handle your balls that counts, scratch that, eww, i mean if you aren't careful you could easily break your balls, i mean bust them... well, (gulp) I see your point.
ReplyDeleteI find that one of the difficult things in life is that there is the ideal that friends and family are rubber balls--that one should be very flexible with them and such.
ReplyDeleteThis is absolutely a good post for my next Friday Zapservice!! I want more of my visitors to read these very wise words. The workball is important, oh yes, but the other ones are far more important.
ReplyDeleteMy work ball isn't working.
ReplyDeleteIt takes balls to always follow through on that (sorry). You're right, of course, sometimes we are so caught up in the "doing", we lose sight of simply "being". Thanks for the reminder, I think that puts a lot in to perspective, doesn't it?
ReplyDeletehahaha! did i expect all these comments on BALLS?! no, but many have made me laugh!
ReplyDeletemelissa, probably!
perriette, let me know what you come up with!
pieterbie, i knew you'd understand!
rm, huge smile...
gj, no, treat friends and family like precious glass.
wieneke, pleased to be of service, my friend... :)
anon, you are a true master of few words. :)
shrink, let's face it: everything worth doing takes balls (oops)
:)
My, KJ you have a lot of balls!

ReplyDeleteSooooo true! I learned this a while back with a personal issue and I always try to remember that when I have to make choices. Thanks for the reminder!
ReplyDeleteYou are absolutely right. When everyone else is gone, only your family remains.
ReplyDeletebibi, you are welcome.
ReplyDeleteces, hey! yes, when everyone else is gone your family remains, but so does your best friend. count on it...
I'm glad I got to read that-it started my day out well. I will also add, that sometimes caring for those glass balls is all the work we can manage.
ReplyDeleteSo true. Yet it gets the most of our time and effort.
