Alphabet Soup

Some time ago this meme came my way. Since I don't think I posted it, for reasons I can't remember, here it is--part 2 of what seems to be back -to-back revelations about myself. I sometimes wonder if/why I share information that is personal to me, but it's a question I can't answer. Like Bibi, the words often just come. I'm learning to modulate and screen them, but it seems I'm also learning to be myself. So in the interest of congruence (good word, huh!), here's my alphabet soup:

A is for age: 38 years old. This is not my actual age but it is how old I would be if I didn’t know how old I am. I am actually 59. If this is a shock to any of you, please know it is a shock to me too.
.
B is for beer of choice: I don’t drink. I can’t drink. That’s another story. But if I did drink, I wouldn’t drink beer. I was a fine wine and zambuca girl….
.
C is for career: I’m a self employed counselor/consultant/trainer who is happily becoming a writer.
.
D is for favorite Drink: hands down, my favorite is Italian Roast Coffee. Every morning I squeal with delight while it’s brewing.
.
E is for Essential item(s) you use everyday: Ok, no lipstick, no jewelryfor me, though I use and like both. I t’s a pen and paper. I’d be lost and longing without them.
.
F is for Favorite song at the moment: Eva Cassidy’s Fields of Gold. It makes me cry for a good reason.
.
H is for How About Whatever Favorite I Choose: Ok, I choose my favorite color. It is green, like grass.
.
G is for favorite Game: I hate games. I try to avoid board games especially. I will play poker or whist but that’s all. Please don’t ask me to play board games. Please.
.
I is for Instruments played: Guitar, piano, tuba, trumpet, violin, drums, and sax. No, none of this is true. I made it up to impress for a fleeting second.
.
J is for favorite Juice: Cranberry juice with soda water and a twist of lime, in a wine glass please. This way I can toast and caress the stemware, just like one of the gang.
.
K is for Kids: I have one darling daughter, one baby grandson, and I love kids of all ages and sizes.
.
L is for last kiss: This afternoon to jb before she left for Newport.
.
M is for marriage: Yes. 19 years unofficially. 2 years legally. 21 years in all. Happily.
.
N is for full Name:As if it's a giant secret. Still, can’t do that in Blogland. My name is not my favorite, but my parents must have liked it. Only a few close friends actually call me kj.
.
O is for Overnight hospital stays: one at age 5 when my tonsils were removed; one at age 30 with the birth of my daughter; one at age 33 for a scary biopsy, and one last fall for back surgery
.
P is for phobias: I have my share: the worse are being alone at airports, driving in snow and ice, and the first 30 seconds of public speaking (all of which my work requires),
.
Q is for quote: "Hell No" or "Hell Yes" said with Ces' cowboy accent. I also like “What the frick..”, which I also picked up also Ces, and now love to say when the moment is right.
.
R is for biggest Regret: hmm. I wish I had saved more money faster. But then again, I’m not sure I would change anything either. If I have to sell shoes at Macy’s when I’m 85, I just hope I don’t have to touch strange feet.
.
S is for sports: I love love love baseball. It is mystical and magical. I believe I am an expert on the game.
.
T is for Time you wake up: varies: sometimes 7:30, sometimes 8, occasionally 6 am.
.
U is for color underwear: most often black. And they match.
.
V is for Vegetable you love: Is an artichoke a vegetable? I love artichokes, especially reaching the heart and dipping it in lemon butter or holidaise sauce.
.
W is for Worst Habit: I can perseverate and nag in an attempt to have it my way.
.
X is for X-rays you’ve had: Because I think this is a stupid question, I decline to answer it.
.
Y is for Yummy food you make: I make a mean garlic and cheese bread, my dad’s spaghetti sauce, and I just mastered turkey gravy—after at least 300 attempts.
.
Z is for Zodiac sign: Leo the Lion, but please be aware even though I am regal I have learned humility.

Anybody else want a go at this A to Z?

  1. Those were fun answers. Can't believe you didn't add snakes to your phonia list. I especially liked, "This is not my actual age but it is how old I would be if I didn’t know how old I am."

  2. P.S. I think I'll tackle this one next month when things ease up a bit for me.

  3. Re. your opening paragraph, find the post called The Unexamined Life about halfway down (May 23) this page: http://kikipotamus.wordpress.com/2007/05/
Then read more of this blog. I just discovered it and I think you will really like it!

  4. I'm sure you've played music with wooden spoons on sauCepans before KJ! Your introduction is of massive proportion, my brain is oozing from all the information :)

  5. Hahaha, what a fun idea to use the alphabet for letting us know more about KJ. A far better idea than the use of it during wedding anniversaries, where the family is standing next to each other with red heads and shaking hands to recite a horrible poem that starts with: The A is for Annie, she likes to cook... The B is for Bert...

  6. Enjoyed your soup!
    I love artichokes too.
    You don't "sound" 59...
    Definitely 38...

  7. kj, that juice recipe sounds delicious. I'm going to have to try that for Sunday breakfast.

This list was such a fun read! Mind if I copy? :-)

  8. I loved this, KJ! We refer to you around the house as "KJ" ... because I "talk" to you so much via this website. The other day I said to myself, "It's K___ for crying out loud!" :) And you totally had me on the instruments. I thought you'd been holding out on us at the hootenannies. Thanks for the fun post -- the last one was wonderful, too ... maybe I'll do this meme ...

  9. cs, it would be fun to see your answers. and of course!--how could i have left out snake phobias?!

andrea, i can't wait to check this out. thank you thank you

anon, wooden spoons and sauce pans--my very favorites. please don't let your brain ooze. :)

oh wieneke, would you consider doing this meme? :)

thanks cream. it was a big deal to announce my age here but since my mouth is getting stuck saying it (i look like a jerk) i thought it would be a good desensitization for me!

val, how nice to hear from you! i please feel free to do this--it will be fun to see what you come up with. i was just thinking yesterday about you.

melissa, if you prefer, it's fine being kj to you and the gang. i'll be waiting to see what you come up with for this meme. it was fun to do.

  11. Aha! I have to remember "W". I won't give in so easily anymore...Someone introduced me to Eva Cassidy's songs, she is a singing angel.

  12. Hello KJ, I started today making my own 'alphabet soup'. Normal vegetable- or tomatosoup is easier to cook, but I am trying and doing my best. My soup is of course made in Dutch, but I will translate a few plates full for my American blogfriends :-)

  13. I loved your answers! Doing a meme gives a different look at you, more 3D. :) XXOO

  14. "This is not my actual age but it is how old I would be if I didn’t know how old I am." How perfect is that? I think that's how we should do it from now on:)
Okay....I'm 32 at night and 55 when I wake up!

  15. thanks for the soup (and for the word "apronwringing" :-))))

  16. I remember doing this meme a while ago.

You got me on the instruments too!

Always a pleasure to get to know more tidbits about you kj. :D

  17. ces, you can't use W against me! it's not fair, unless you admit to your own W!

wieneke, i'm hungry to see what you've cooked up.

    tammy, thank you!

    singleton, hahaha

hildegarde, i like the word 'apronwringing' too.

    menchie, likewise.

  18. Well done. You are absolutely charming!
It's nice that you care enough to reveal so much of yourself.

  19. Brave comes to mind after reading your meme. You told us much about you which hard for many. As I read your alphabet I could feel the "happy" in your sentences. This is such a fun way to get to know you better.

You had me going on the age at first. I thought you were at least 30 .

  20. A is for aperture: you must master the control of you aperture to be a creative photographer.

B for business: it makes the world go round economically, but don’t we overrate the importance of this abstract concept?

C is for Charles who was my first colleague when I started work. A great and mature guy, he taught me quite a few things.

D is for Danny, my bother 13 years older than me. We drifted apart after I got married and the loss of my mother back in 2001 brought us back together. I think we have become real brothers since that sad event.

E is for energy: I have too much of that, I think that one of these days I will kill myself. I drive myself far too hard, people don’t understand how I can live at such a pace. Don’t ask me: I’ll be damned if I know.

F, ouch, now why am I thinking of the F-word? Friendship, that is better!

G generous, I can be that.

H the French don’t pronounce this letter when a word starts with it, the Dutch do. I have learnt to speak in the French way since I worked in France for 6 months.

I is for interest, things interest me or they don’t. I don’t have a grey area in that respect.

J jolly, fun, humour: a very important asset in my life.

K = Kilkenny, I differ from KJ in the fact that I do like a glass of beer, wine as well. I’m not too keen on strong liquor. Kilkenny is a great Irish Ale.

L love: there is not enough around. Some people feel unloved. That is a shame.

M mistakes: you should learn from them, they will show you the way to becoming better.

N natural beauty: this gorgeous looking young lady just boarded the train in Gent and does me the favour of sitting diagonally across from me. Yep this confirms that I get my kicks visually, but then what would you have expected from a amateur photographer?

O overpaid, overworked, oversexed and over here. That is what a lot of Europeans said about the problem with the Yanks during WWII. But they introduced some stuff that has changed our culture since, like chewing gum (terrible stuff really). I have nothing against Americans, it just came to mind.

P, obviously makes me think of my first name.

Q: Tarantino, of course. A great filmmaker.

U: and having thought Tarantino, I have to think Thurman. But u also stands for underneath, you should always try to penetrate the top layer.

V: vrij is the Dutch word for free(dom). It is also the conjugation for “to make love” of “to have sex” in the first person. “Ik vrij” means “I’m making love”. “Ik ben vrij” means “I am free”.

W: free Willy? No, dreadful, association with the previous word. Wendy: once my assistant and a great friend. Wishful thinking: an expression I use a lot in a professional context.

X: xenophobia is not something I suffer from. I do share a fear with KJ: driving on snow and ice. Years ago I had to drive in a heavy storm and was blown off the read, my car just slipped off. It came to a halt very neat to a canal, one with a deep drop down to the water.

Y: young: I wish a was young again. Getting older means losing abilities. I’m not getting any better at sport and I need more time to recover.

Z: ZZtop is a great guitar group. Very sexist video’s though, but I like the guitars. Do I have strange values, talking about a pretty woman in one item and then calling ZZtop sexists? Nope he doesn’t, there is nothing wrong with finding a woman pretty, there is nothing wrong with appreciating a good looking man, as long as there is respect.

Have I done a good job?
Have I bored you to death?
I never thought I would finish this.
    Must reward myself now.

  21. S - I think I could think of a much more interesting word instead of sports...

As for baseball, who was the last player to achieve the record of 3,000 hits? It happened last night and it was adouble and he also happens to have the most doubles by a right-handed player - if you read today's paper already or heard the news then you are cheating.

Pietrbie's alphabet just reveals the kind of wonderful guy he is - but I cracked up reading the F word!

Do you know your alphabet soup is circling the blogs? I read Val's Fluffy Pink blog last night and she referenced your alphabet soup.

  27. he, i don't mean to reveal so much of myself, certainly not more than others do! i'm surprised that it's viewed that way

babe, thank you. i try hard to be happy, but i'm not always. sometimes it's just the way it is, other times i get stuck in my wishes and attachments and can't keep my self grounded in the present moment. i'm a continual piece of work, like everybody else..

pieterbie, a huge grin from me. your alphabet is just delightful. i don't know where to start.
F--haha. from that to Friendship. very smooth!
Energy--i've slowed myself down and i like it. i hope you enjoy weekends and vacations.
virj--i want to remember this word. i love its dual meanings--how fitting!
i just so appreciate your take on life, generosity, respect, etc! i wish ces and i would met you someday.

ces, no post of mine could ever be complete without your avatar. besides for being my best friend, you are my funniest and smartest. :)

  29. Thanks, ladies!
I'm glad you didn't take offence concerning the F-word, you see I honestly just played a game of the first thing that crossed my mind.
Realizing that F-thought wasn't that clean or nice, I switched to something I value very highly :-)
