Untitled
I've been vaguely unhappy with my blog. Not enough colors and words. Not enough poetry and not enough honest writing. So this will hopefully change. Here goes.

I stopped writing poems
When the light changed
that third time, in '08.
What first exalted became charcoal
and what came then
immobilized me,
banished to a room with no words.
Then in time, cast from a firmer grain,
I glimpsed the shine again,
a beam teasing me with future hope.
It's six decades before I admit
that one rock from destiny
can imprison.
I'll say it now: life is hard.
Too hard. Too much.
Still,
light brings warmth,
every sunrise proves that true.
But there's an important rub:
light from the past can only dim.
There is no forward
until you look ahead,
until you let the darkness
lose.
So hard letting that darkness lose.
ReplyDeleteWishing you light.

Hard indeed. And yet, I'm a believer in light.

Light from the past can only dim...this is a powerful image.
ReplyDeleteThe human mind seems to run on the past and future and has trouble enjoying the present moment. Your eloquent words make me think about darkness vs. light - I've recently read a book about the shadow and how it is important to integrate it into our psyche, for all it is, is split off energy needing to be understood and recognized.
Be.

Now.
Thanks Amanda. Split off energy needed to be recognized and understood. What a fascinating thought.
It's all one ride, isn't it? And thank god we find oneanother along the way

Colors are good. Words are good. Poetry is confusing because it values form over clarity.
ReplyDeleteDear snow, now do you know that your honest comment is a bit if an insult to my poem. Damn that there is truth in that comment :-)

I really love how you opened this post. I have been feeling much the same at my site lately and think I need to drop from the challenges and move on to more extemporaneous and honest writing. I have to say yours was my favorite and most helpful comment yesterday and I so appreciate it. Im feeling in need of some direction and you nailed it on the head. Letting the darkness lose can be difficult and we have to be careful of not defining ourselves by it or enabling it to move in. Thanks for your help! Z~
ReplyDeleteHi Zoe, nice to see you back. Give me time: I will get in the groove of following you too
DeleteI'm glad my comment meant something. I did think some of the responses to your honest post kind of missed the point. It surprised me alittle

wonderful photo. life is hard. do i keep forgetting this? why does my life right now seem the hardest of all.?? do you think sometimes we need to go down into the dark and come out the other side?
ReplyDeleteSuki, I think the time just before the corner is turned is the hardest.
DeleteI don't know if we NEED to go down into the dark but I do know there is light on the other side. That, I insist on remembering
Ps I think it's time, suki. The cape.....

Your words are always so positive, I enjoy that.
ReplyDeleteOh god I love you, Mim. I write this depressing poem and you see through the seaweed!

It's be foolish of me to take my eyes off the darkness.
ReplyDeleteMark, this is true.

I love poetry. I like to read and re-read ... letting the words slowly sink in to capture the intention. Well-strung words can bear different truths for each reader.
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't matter if one knows what rock that was; what is monumental here is triumph of the Human Spirit. We were created to live splendidly.

Dear mid life poet, we live in splendor, and I think we suffer too. That's all I know to day tonight.
DeleteYou are so very brave. I bow to you, dear deb

Ah, yes. The challenges of the dark, especially when it pulls you way down. Been there; done that; have the scars. I've finally gone back to poetry, too. I've got a piece for tomorrow (I think/hope) at the Urban Forest.
ReplyDeleteBTW, I've been over to Blogland Lane. My tent is fine – not bothered by the winter. So I'm going to be back and forth from River City to Blogland Lane over the summer. Perhaps I'll see you there, Madam Mayor.
Blessings and Bear hugs!
