UBUNTU: Do you know this term? I didn't. But just now I read this little story and I could just see these children running together as one, the concept of competing or "winning" so foreign that it does not enter their minds.
I googled UBUNTU and there it is: a way of being. 'I AM BECAUSE WE ARE.'
Here I go thinking again. When I have the chance, what if I'm willing to hold hands instead of running alone? What if I see sharing as a wonderful means to satisfaction? What if my joy is multiplied because of your joy?
Just a thought. But I'm sharing it and I don't want to forget it. I'm interesting in your reaction.

Addendum: I'm told and I've studied that competition and survival of the fittest is dominant in all species. And yet, UBUNTU contradicts that. Yes? Right?
Hi!
ReplyDeleteLove this thank you for sharing!
ReplyDeleteok i'd love to hold hands with you and the rest of the tribe and run together. sounds good to me.
ReplyDeleteIt makes sense to me.
ReplyDeleteBri's been on the phone for hours. I'll call you soon :)

Lo♥
I want this idea in America!
ReplyDeleteubuntu is one of my favorite words since i learned it. once, i heard desmond tutu describe the meaning of ubuntu (he came to santa barbara!) and it made me cry. i made a tshirt with the word embroidered on it (it's been given away) and now that you've reminded me kj, i'm going to make another. i love that photo and words you've shared. xxx lori
ReplyDeleteI do not ever compete for a winners spot...there is no point in winning when I would share the gilded cage with as many as would fit in it anyway.Ubuntu is a way of life we all learn but most forget when wealth becomes our focus.
ReplyDeleteI loved this so much - survival of the species rather than the individual. I always feel better if I share with someone. I don't have much in a material way but I can share my laughter and my joy or just a smile and see it in the face of the person I've shared with. Great message for our children. Running together to a common goal and holding each other up on the way. Ubuntu!
ReplyDeleteubuntu is a very cool concept and cultural phanomena as well...read up on it after reading desmond tutu's book...and it is the way, i do believe, but our culture is def far different than that...
ReplyDeleteit's a lovely concept, and can also be linked to survival of the fittest - depending on how you look at it. If one is realist and realizes that one cannot survive alone...then you've got it. Let's run and hold hands for sure!
ReplyDeleteI love this, and I wish more people would be like these sweet innocent children.

Quaker kids play cooperative games with no winners or losers. At one family retreat, we all - kids and adults - played a game of tag that had constantly shifting teams and no goal other than to keep the fun going. I have never laughed that hard in a game of tag in my life.
ReplyDeleteThis gives me pause. IT IS TRUE. I am thinking of "It takes a village." I know that my life is so enriched when I join hands with others-like you and J.
ReplyDeleteSending love,
S
Of course I know UBUNTU very well- have lived that life, have enjoyed and shared UBUNTU with everyone I knew. I also like this saying:
ReplyDelete"There is no 'I' in team!"
I have never heard this before, but as you can probably already imagine... I love it (in a big, BIG way)!

p.s. I have just had a glorious time "catching up"... The story of Chase's seizures made me cry, and so did the story of the "big boy camera" - I agree... definitely worth every penny! I still remember the camera Effie & George (my grandparents) bought for me when I was a little girl (and I remember the very first photos I took with it... In Cape Cod, of all places!)
p.p.s. You are amazing... Just sayin'.
