This post is for Annie. If anyone else enjoys it, that is good and fine. But mostly I am happy to offer a glimpse of the New York Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) to my dear persistent gutsy always hopeful friend Annie. Okay already! Here it is, girlfriend!!

And we continue to this exhibit which I found inspirationally heartbreaking. My first true love was an African American woman and although I can never know the depth of slavery and oppression, I think I do know something about racism and prejudice.

I apologize that I did a totally poor job of being able to attribute and credit the photographers. I should have used my Moleskine and not relied on my camera to connect one picture and one artist. So I won't even try. I will let these women speak for themselves:

ReplyDeleteI loved it all and some of the photos were emotional and moving, like the African American ones( loved that one and the fact that you snuck in HA!) and the girl with the black eyes.

I liked your fillin post, i thought of that too, but i've been too lazy/busy for even that, heehee. But the poem was great, i feel like doing some of those things too.

I love this! That you took the time to take pictures instead of filching them from the museum shots archive. I see you in one of the reflections KJ which is just perfect. It shows you were there. I don't mean that you just went though ... you know? You went, you were there, you acted ... like you were there. You shared.

ReplyDeleteWhat a great post! I KNOW Annie loved it.... I am always interested in seeing Museums through other people's eyes....and seeing MOMA through yours has been a wonderful medley of different styles and periods of "Modern Art"....you did not disappoint!
ReplyDeleteI must (ahem) comment on the first one.... these two sillouttes seem to be "famous" in their own right.... the boy looks like either "Buster Brown" or the "Blue Boy".... and the girl resembles someone.... just can't figure out who? Does anyone have an idea?
I love the dancer.... what a powerful photo... and love the one that shows YOU taking a photo.

ReplyDeleteI remember watching something on the tv last year about photographers documenting the great depression that photo of the mother and her children was amongst them, it's a powerful photograph*!*
This may hep to explain that first image Yes it is what it looks like a young black female child giving oral sex to a young white male child.

The Picasso's are my favorite only because I was obsessed with him for a period. I did his portrait in four mediums: Oil, lino cut, aquatint etching and pencil. His oil portrait hands in my studio. Did you notice him? And his pencil portrait and aquating are on the shelf there. I should have pointed them out but we were busy!
I'm glad you did this for Annie. I'm wondering if I should post my RISD shots today?

Ha Ha Ha...I did not "see" what was happening in the first photo either, until it was pointed out. Oh! That is so funny...my inattention, I mean, is funny, not necessarily the photo. And I've seen that picture before and don't believe I noticed it then, either!!!

Oh my God, KJ, I can't believe you didn't notice that! I laughed out loud at you're response to our comments. It's actually an appalling thing, isn't it? Both because they're children and because of the racism/power imbalance. Surely not something I'd want in my child's room!
