Mish Mash Update

This is Chase. He is a six year old Greyhound who stopped racing last May. He is able to reach 42 miles a hour in three seconds and if he were to take off after a squirrel, he would be dangerously gone.

Greyhounds are only allowed to race from age 2-5. I'm told 25,000 greyhounds 'retire' each year and 18,000 are adopted, meaning the remaining 7000 are put to sleep. So there is a great need for rescue. I am still surprised JB and I have adopted a greyhound, a breed we know so little about, and I'm very glad.

Chase is an elegant and unfamiliar dog. His skin is thinner than mine. His legs are unbelievably foldable. He is smart and peace loving and he could not be more gentle. He cannot be off leash unless he is in an enclosed space. He sprints and then he sleeps.

We met Chase because I had a dream that I had a dog named Chase. When we saw his name in Pet Finder, we drove to Connecticut to his foster family.

Chase needs a little extra medical attention but so what? JB and I can do that. It's already nice to have him around. He has lived a life of strict routine as a race dog, and he is not going to have strict routine with us. But we will come to know each other and love each other and I think it will be very good. (Wieneke: these pictures are for you xo)

This is my friend Tracie performing near me last week at a combination bar and music shop not far from my house. Tracie is one of the five or so singer/songwriters in my Big Yellow writing group. JB and I and a few other friends clapped and clapped after every song. It is very cool to have friends who are musicians.

I would like sympathy. THIS is the stairway I must climb, to the TOP floor, to see a client. I am too old for this. Quite a job, don't you think? :^)

In contrast, this is the view from my kitchen window. Until Chase arrived last week there were five robins hanging in the bird bath and around and about. I've loved watching these and other birds so much. But not a peep in the last week.....

Once a year I pull out my watercolor and paint something. I copied this restaurant scene from a magazine ad. When I wrote down what I wanted to do on vacation this summer, I wrote "Paint A Tree." So I painted this tree.

THIS is where I currently am again. Back in Provincetown. For a lost weekend with JB and Chase. ♥

Been a good week or so. I'm happy for that!

I love that you have music and musicians in your life, and the Big Yellow.
And I am very sorry you have to climb those steps! I hope not really often, as my knee throbs thinking about it.
I had a really really good comment for your previous post,,,,but it wouldn't post, and now I've forgotten it.
Something about the words nuggets and turds sounding interchangeable to me,,,,I dunno,,,

  3. Oh, what a lovely dog he is. Thanks so much for the story and the pictures, Karen. As doglover I always want to know about the pets of my blogfriends. So I hope you will post about the adventures of Chase another time. Chase is one lucky fellow and I know that he knows ;-)
Those stairs! Whahahaha! Every step 10 grams bodyweight? Think about that too.

    1. Angela, you see chase correctly. He is smart and sweet. He is self reliant in his own way: no doubt from his life and career at the racetracks

I just brought cut zinnias into the house, Angela. So festive, like your latest painting

  6. Oh my, Chase IS a handsome boy! I have to climb three flights of stairs to go to the Bed Room. Yes, I DO live in a tower.

  7. That Chase is a real sweetie. Our son and dil have a Greyhound x Irish Wolfhound named Wally, recently adopted from the University. Amazingly gentle critter, compared to his brother, the very bouncy Ollie (Portuguese Water Dog).

Lovely watercolour piece. I wish I could ten per cent as capable.

Heads up for Emily. Big increase in the market of avocados. (See: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/09/23/avocado-nafta-consumption-booming_n_1907430.html)

I will pass your info on to Emily. She is threatening to report me to the ASPCA due to the size of chase :-)

  8. They used to do mass slaughters of retired greyhounds, and I'm thankful for the rescue organizations. They are such gentle, loving dogs. And yes, thin-skinned - they get nicked easily. Have you noticed that when they try to sit, their rears don't reach the ground because of how their legs are made?

(Also, you may well already know this, but they do best with elevated food and water bowls because it's hard for them to eat that low to the ground. They have them at pet supply places.)

    1. Oh shudder, cs. So sad, treatment of do many dogs throughout the world.

Yes, we have elevated bowls. And I understand chase will need a winter coat. A new dog experience for me :-)

As soon as chase sits, he ends up lying down :-)

  10. Hey there, Chase! Good job planting your name into Kj's subconscious so she would know you were ready to come home. As for those stairs, Kj, my right knee is not happy with me, and so whoever was at the top of those stairs would have to be very patient. Creak...creak...snap...crackle...pop. haha.

  14. Chase is adorable! You seem to have such a settled and peaceful life! I am envious you have a client that you GO TO, as opposed to a desk job. I am envious that you have a weekend that is no longer lost. I am envious that you can paint a tree that actually resembles one as opposed to the shrubby looking things I manage to crayola on occasion. I don't have to be envious of musician friends, because I have that :)

    Love you!

    This is wonderful to see!
Chase looks cautiously happy. He has a gentle, adorable face.
This is a nice story - that your dream led you to adopting Chase, I'm very happy for him!
A neighbour of mine went down somewhere in the States twice to adopt rescued greyhounds, they were fine animals, and companions, with a gentle presence. One was named Gryphyn.
    I like your watercolour painting!
Thanks for your thoughtful comment today, it was appreciated!

  19. I love chase already! That 700 have to be put to sleep makes it clear to me they have to forbid this whole dog racing........
When I worked in the shelter we had a lot of greyhounds and whippets. which were all used for poaching. Very gentle dogs though but never could be trusted without a leash and sometimes difficult to place with cats. But I always loved their gentle spirit.... So special about these breed....
Well I know he will have a happy retirement with both of you!!!
Hope to meet him in person one day.
    Those stairs.......poor you!
But both dog and stairs will keep your condition high dear ;)
Glad you are in Ptown enjoy every moment there dear. How does Chase find Ptown? And he doesn't mind being in a car?

  25. You're a better old tree-painter than I, that's for sure.

You chose a great way to get a dog. I'm not sure at the moment that I will ever have another one after the traumas we've been through with our last two, but I sure the heck would get some kind of a dog that needed a home rather than one that was being sold so someone could make money. I hope Chaise is everything you could ask for, and that he will be able to say the same about you, and I have confidence that he will.
