In Aruba Part 1

.
Just before I left for my family vacation in Aruba, my dear friend Lo told me to be sure to draw some while I was gone. So I packed up my colored pencils, #3 & 5 micron pens, one favorite pencil, one small pencil sharpener, AND my special moleskine, the one that is designed for two sketches per page.
.

.

I spent the week with JB, Mr. Ryan, my beloved daughter Jessica, her best friend Janna, and her Mother-in-law Pat. This was the second time we girls plus Mr. Ryan lounged around in Aruba, and the second time we had a blast together.

.
Our days consisted of early morning to late afternoon outdoors, lounging, swimming, floating, sunning, eating, sipping, chatting, strolling, following iguanas, bobbing, splashing, and for me drawing. And our nights consisted of more of all of the above except for following the iguanas.
.
.
.
.
.
Mr. Ryan age 3 was total fun the entire week. Here is a collaboration with him and with contributions by his Mother, three grandmothers, and Janna. To him we spent our week in one of two places: either the hotel or 'in aruba'.

Thank you for so many notes and comments about Renee. It was difficult to lose her and be away from our shared grief at the same time. I will write about that later, once I settle back home. I will also share an idea I have about how we can collectively honor both Renee and her many friends and at the same time offer comfort to her family and to ourselves.

Love kj

  1. Sounds heavenly. I once saw one of those funny video things and the dad kept asking the little girl where they were and she kept say "Your Ami" till he finally said, No, YOUR Ami and then she said surprised, MIAMI??? So cute.**kisskiss** Deb

  2. I love moleskins too! And Mr. Ryan's squiggles on top of your drawings (which are wonderful) is precious.

Did I tell you that I love Emily's plan to plant jellybeans? She need's her own children's book, you know that don't you?

We all miss our Renee, but she did leave her amazing gift for love behind, didn't she? I cherish her memory.

  3. deb, that is adorable--my ami! when we were having breakfast yesterday morning, jessica, who hoped ryan would sit with his grandmother mimi on the plane ride, asked him, 'ryan, when we get on the plane do you want to play with mimi or pray with mommy?'
hee hee. ♥ to you deb.

linda, mr. ryan's squiggles came first. we drew around and into them. emily' book? oh dear god, she would probably overcharge for it and then blame me. but thanks. maybe you should plant jelly beans too. and renee: sigh, linda, who we loved her. loving like that is so good, huh? ♥

  4. Love these kj, both yours and Ryan's! Looks like you had a marvelous time, so glad you had a chance to recharge.

I was so saddened about Renee, not sursprisingly, she touched me eventhough I never knew her. I am glad she is free of pain now and at peace.

Thanks for your kind and encouraging comments on my last post - illustrating, writing and blogging are all part of my fun and inspirational journey!

  5. Welcome Back! Your strength and spirit were SO missed....but, I am SO happy you and your loved ones had a fantastic time. Love the artwork - especially "Mr. Ryan's".... he is going to take after his Grandmother!

Ease back gently into work and life...

I would like to be a part of whatever you decide to do to honour our Renee.

    Sending you a big hug!

    Love,

    ♥ Robin ♥

p.s. Hope Emily did not completely run amuck while you were gone...

    p.p.s. I realise that is a foolish hope.. ;)

  8. Kj...GIRL, I told you you could draw!!!!!! Wow! Look at the perspective (sorry Mim) in the turret windows! And the freeness and looseness of each drawing. No stiffness, just awesomeness! You rock! Who needs drawring lessons? (I added the R on purpose.):)

Good to have you back. We'll talk again later. And yes, put me down for beinga part of any kind of tribute to our senior angel, Renee.

    Love you!
    xoxo

  9. wow you ARE an artist, soon you will be joining our little 'gang'doing cactus mondays!etc. yippppeeee love what you and ryan drew. am glad you had such a good time, but hell i missed you like crazy this week when renee left us. i know we have all been waiting for this to happen, but it all feels empty now.of course i am included in any tribute. wonder if angelique will continue with her blog? what does it all mean kj? what does it all mean?

  10. welcome home kj, sounds like a really wonderful true vacation. I absolutely love your collaboration with Ryan - he is a masterful artist!
I thought of you when I first learned of Renee's passing, knowing you were away, and how vacations and loss just aren't supposed to go together. I am sorry for your loss, for our loss... though I am grateful for Renee's release from suffering.
I so appreciate that you have come up with thoughts on how we can honor Renee, for I am at a loss - knowing I want to do something, but feeling overwhelmed for a whole lot of reasons. Just know you can count me in, and I look forward to learning how. Be well and take care as you settle back in.
    love, Karin

Sounds like the perfect (relax) holiday to me!
Your drawings are very well just wonderful, you should do something with that talent as well!
    Love those iguana's!
Did you went to the island with the flamingo's?
I know you have mixed feelings but please hold on to this feeling as well. You needed this as well.

    Take care!

  17. Welcome back! I would love to be a part of any tribute to Renee, and I've been thinking about that, too. :)
Sounds like a fabulous vacation. Emily Plush wants to come live with you, and has been asking me where in the heck are you, anyway? xo Pam

  18. lo, whenever i was drawing i would think, 'i hope lo likes this', so your comments here are a yipee-up-the-spine for me! thank you very much (even though we both know i do need drawring lessons.) love love love you too.

joss, thank you very much. i understand your question about what does it all mean but i don't know the answer. renee is a rare person among us, joss. she allowed many to channel the love within and express it without awkwardness. if it means anything, it means love freely, fully. and why not? you know i've learned a hard lesson about trusting, but i don't regret the love. xoxox

hi karin, it's so nice to see you here. thanks for all your comments.
i think there are many many of us who want to somehow share our love and appreciation for our senior angel. ♥

marianne, no flamingos in aruba, but a zillion iguanas! thank you so much for your thoughtfulness and support over these past weeks. and marianne, i got your card and little presents last week. yahoo! you are such a doll, so kind to me. tsup! & ♥

marie, hello, it's nice to be back. you know, i think you are the love pixie of blogland. that's how i see you. ♥

  19. i think everyone should head over to chrisy's to see her tribute to senior angel renee. it rocks!

chrisy, i'm glad we have become blogmates. xoxox

ah mim...i know. tsup & xoxox

stacey, the vacation was so nice it didn't even matter that i was sick through alot of it! stacey, i have two big writing tasks to finish up, and then i hope we can talk some memoir together. xoxoxo

pam, i am so ready for emily plush! i will check out your email address on your blog so you know where to reach me. if that doesn't work, you can email me at karenjasper@comcast.net. ♥

  21. Welcome home! I missed you, it was hard to have you be gone when Renee left, but things happen as they are meant to happen. Can't wait to hear your idea, I have been thinking about what we could do too, but have come up with nothing much. I love your drawings and the one of your toes is my favorite.
Happy you had a good time!
    Love,

  23. Ahhhhhh, Arubah.........Texas was nice too except that condo was a split level-two flights of stairs from bedroom to living room/kitchen-and all toilets UP the stairs. I just stayed near the toilet end of things when my legs got really tired....LOL. Priorities!

I didn't draw, but I took two unfamiliar cameras-one I'll keep-one is going into the drawer-I HATE it and that, as Emily says, is THAT, but I'm giving myself points for trying.

  24. OMG!!! I LOVE that big green lizard, gecko thingy at the top of the page! What is that? It's a fabulous picture!

(It's name must be "Oboako". That's my word verification.)

  25. mim, you'll be my friend anyways and i'll be your friend always. when i'm down the the cape this summer, i want you to come draw with me. and let's face it: we both know you are the teacher and i am the student. :)

annie, yes, it was hard to be away. i thought of you and robin and so many of renee's special friends and i felt badly that i could not be present for mutual support. but we will mourn and honor her for some time to come, and i will treasure being part of that. and you, annie: your paintings make me dance!!! :)

pam, hahaha, what KIND of smoke signals?!! hee hee ( i emailed you, girl)

debra kay, you definitely get points for trying. i have your little flip book of ptown here on my desk and i cherish it. no fair you had stairs to the bathroom though. bah! :)

there were everywhere, linda, and BIG. sometimes they just dropped to the ground from a high up tree and we thought it was a coconut thump until someone said no, it was the iguanas. OMG! drop on my head and i faint on the spot, which would be better than thinking of those nails tangled in my hair. okay, that's enough. yuk. but they were very fun to spot and watch. xoxo

I am glad you got away and relaxed. renee wanted you to be happy and serene.

Now lady those drawings are amazing. I especially love the first one.

Ive been staying busy. Been reading about healing yoga and meditation.

  28. sonia, healing yoga and meditation? you are changing your life, aren't you? i think that is so great. i know it will help your aches and stiffness. thanks for liking my drawings. i felt like a fifth grader doing them and it was totally great. ♥ to you my friend.

pattee, i am sorry i wasn't around the day we lost renee. please know my heart was with you. thanks for your kind comment about my drawings. i'm just starting to venture out, artwise. ♥ to you too pattee

  29. Kj, did you say "yuk" about having a lovley, beautiful, big igunana fall on your head? :-). I think I would love it as long as he didn't bite.
Don't feel badly about being gone while Renee left(she did not really LEAVE, she is still very much alive, just not here, none of us could have known when that was going to happen.
    xoxo

  30. annie, well, you are braver than i, by far! so you like reptiles, huh? i will admit they infrequently but definitely smiled and i smiled back. about the line of life and death, i just don't know. renee's passing has taught me something about that that is very very important, but it is not clear to me yet. tsup!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Tsup*!* You're back and sounds like you had a wonderful time. Did Emily sneak that Iguana into your case, he looks like he's staying put for a while, should blend in fine with all the new Spring growth, gorgeous emerald green. I see her lurking in your artwork, hope she wasn't throwing peas your way, they'd clash with those fabulous toes ...

  32. hi karen! Hope you have recovered from your sore throat ;)

We are all going to miss Renee..for sure. Sending you love and hugs,

  33. Well, kj, it appears you are an amazing artist as well as an incredible writer! Those drawings are perfect for illustrations in a book...I hope you'll consider using them. And it sounds as if, even with sickness, you and everyone else had a wonderful, relaxing time...I'm so glad! I hope you are once more up to par.

I barely knew Renee; yet she touched my heart in so many ways. I will miss her and her loving ways, yet I don't feel she is ever very far.

I've got some training to go to today...it's been very intense, leaving me not much time to write. I think of Renee when someone in the hospice group mentions a heroic death. I'm glad I knew her, even if it was for just a short time.

    ReplyDelete
  34. :-). I love all creatures in the world.
As for death, I believe Renee may have more to teach as she begins to visit us in some special way. I have very firm beliefs in this area and it helps me at times like this.

  35. Hey, KJ! You changed your header... L♥ve the Iguana.... reminds me of my beloved, now deceased, pet lizard, Uranus.... but that's another story....

Sending you love and strength as you return to work.... and the enormous task of being our "ringleader" to honour Renee.
It is a huge task....but I know you are up to it - and I am willing to help in any way I can..

    Many hugs,

    ♥ Robin ♥
